The CPU (Central Processing Unit)
Objectives
- State the core components of the CPU
- Describe the fetch, decode and execute cycle
- Explain the purpose of the CPU and the factors that affect CPU performance
Task 1
Click on the button below to launch an online Caesar Cipher Tool. Type into the first, large box, the cipher text: FRGH. In the second, smaller box type 3 (the number of places to shift the alphabet) and click the decrypt button. What word are you expecting to see when the cipher text is decoded/decrypted?

Task 2
Click on a command button to see a web page with a cipher on it. At the end of the cipher text it will give you a clue as to the number used to shift the original word. Using the online Caesar Cipher tool that you used in task one, copy the scrambled text and paste it into the larger box, and attempt to break the code. If you fail with your first attempt, paste the scrambled text back in and try a different number.
Once you have cracked the code you need to fill in the blanks on your sheet. Can you also use the information to finish the incomplete CPU diagrams?

Super Challenge:
Use the web to find a new fact out about the processor and create a cipher for it - challenge a friend to find the cipher and decode/decrypt your message.
